“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.” (I Corinthians 13:12)

Members and Friends of Valley,

It’s been said before, but one of the amazing things about growing older is that you continue to learn how much you still don’t know.

The Apostle Paul, in his famous hymn to love in I Corinthians 13, speaks about learning.  As we mature, our eyes can become more clearly focused on who and what is truly most important.  We can accept that there are mysteries today that will only be answered in due time.  And we can look back upon the wisdom of our ancestors to teach us how to face and cope with uncertainties.

On this Mother’s Day weekend, we remember the wisdom of our forebears; their ability to sometimes see and know more clearly and fully than we can today.  Many of them – our parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. – had a better understanding of the necessity of relationships and story-telling; and the importance of hospitality and community.

Despite modern advances in communication and technology, today we often lack foresight and perspective.  We want things to happen right now.  Paul reminds us that even in our doubting, even in our incompleteness, we are fully known; the God who made us, also, loves and accepts us; wanting us to grow and learn, but patiently waiting for us to mature in our understanding.  Maybe, then, we can be more patient, too.

Blessings to all our mothers, and to every son and daughter who carries forward their teachings and wisdom.

Inviting all folks from 12-100 years of age, who like to knit or who would like to learn, to be a part of Valley’s Knitting Group.  We will be knitting special items like prayer shawls, blankets, and other helpful and comforting items for our members and people in our community.

On Sunday, May 19, we will be honoring graduates from high school, college, and other training or degree programs.  If you would like a family member to be recognized in that Sunday’s bulletin, please contact the church office with the information.  Thank you.

Church Work Days

Our church building and grounds require many helping hands to keep it functional and beautiful. There will be tools and jobs available on Saturday, May 18 (9 a.m. to noon) and after church on Sunday, May 19 for those who would like to help. You can, also, pitch in a different time at your convenience. Please see Elder Jerry Moreno for project ideas.

“We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us.” (Romans 12:6)

Members and Friends of Valley,

There is a robin’s nest located in the bushes in front of our home – just in the last few days, the bright blue eggs have hatched and now there are three tiny birds. Spring has sprung!

In the weeks since Easter, we have been looking, in worship, at texts from the first chapters of Acts to see stories about the nature and focus of the newly birthed early church.

For these first two Sundays of May, we turn to First Corinthians and look at two of Paul’s most important teachings about the early church: in chapter 12 he claims that the gifts of the Spirit are given to each and all are for building up the one body of Christ; and in chapter 13 Paul famously teaches that “faith, hope, and love abide, these three, and the greatest of these is love.”

This week, we will share the Lord’s Supper and some very special music. Next week, on Mother’s Day, we will have a special gift for all daughters and mothers. We invite you to join us on these spring Sunday mornings for worship.
